Whales and Dolphins
All sea creatures and birds were of huge importance to the Maori as a source of food and utensils. Some sea creatures like the whale and the dolphin, were particularly revered, as they are believed to have helped some Maori navigate their way across the South Pacific during the Great Migration. Both are seen as symbols of protection, which today includes protection for travellers on all modes of transport.
The dolphin is also a symbol of playfulness, friendship and harmony.
